Ellen Alice SMITH married grandfather Jesse William STANTON in Newport
(Monmouthshire) in 1883, and gave her father’s name as Samuel a "Mechanical
Engineer". On the 1891 and 1901 census, Ellen stated her place of birth as Bristol
Extensive searching of earlier Bristol census’s
eventually found Samuel SMITH, as the father of Ellen SMITH (b 1861). Samuel’s
occupation seems to have been a "Coal Pit Engine Driver", although both he and
his father James describe themselves as "Engineer" on other census’s.
Samuel and his father James were from Bedminster, now part of Bristol, but then
"over the border" (the River Avon) in Somerset. By 1871, the
family had moved to Frampton Cotterell in
Gloucestershire, so Ellen might well not have known precisely where she was born,
and "Bristol" was probably a good enough general description to give to census
enumerators 30 /40 years later!.
Ellen was not baptised "Ellen Alice", however she did have a cousin called Alice born
one month earlier, its seems likely the two girls were close to each other as
children.
Ellen’s mother was Mary Ann who was also Samuel`s first cousin, so both sets of parents are
3x Grandparents (James and John SMITH were siblings).
