The MAY family originated in Bratton Clovelly, but Robert and Joan (sometimes Joanna) moved to Bridestowe shortly after marrying in 1794. Their family grew up in Bridestowe, and daughter Agnes married William WESTLAKE there. Agnes named her first daughter after her little sister Thomasine who died aged only three (who in turn was named after her aunt, Robert's sister).
